Where To Actually Get Outreach Done

Three options, and the cheapest one on paper is usually the most expensive.

By Anthony Pinto ·

Two threads worth reading together. One owner asking where people hire call agents. Another asking how to scale a solo freelance business past the point where the founder is the whole pipeline.

Same problem underneath. Someone has decided outreach needs to happen and is trying to work out who does it.

Option one: hire someone

The appeal is control. They are yours, they learn your business, and the cost is a known number.

What people miss is that you aren't buying activity, you're buying judgment, and judgment takes months to build. A new hire can't tell a good-fit account from a bad one in your market on day one, so for the first stretch you're paying someone to work a list you had to build for them anyway.

Hiring works when you already know who to target and what to say. It fails when you're hoping the hire will figure that out, because they will figure it out slowly and expensively, and if they leave you keep none of it.

Option two: pay an agency

Fast, and that's genuinely worth something. They've infrastructure, they've done it before, and you get volume in weeks rather than quarters.

The thing to be careful about is what you're left holding. Ask who owns the target list, who owns the message that worked, and where the reply data lives. If the answer to all three is the agency, you're renting a pipeline. The month you stop paying, you're back where you started with nothing to show for it.

That isn't an argument against agencies. It's an argument for asking the ownership question out loud before you sign, and being suspicious of anyone who gets vague about it.

Option three: systemize it

Build the list, write the sequence, automate the sending and the follow-up, and keep all of it. Slower to stand up. The only option that leaves you with an asset.

The catch is that it needs one thing from you that the other two do not, which is a decision about who you actually sell to. A system will do exactly what you point it at, at volume, which means a vague target produces a lot of well-executed noise.

How to tell which one you're ready for

If you can't describe your best customer in a sentence that excludes people, none of the three will work yet. Fix that first, and it costs nothing but an afternoon with your invoice history.

If you can describe them but you've never run outreach, systemize before you hire. You will learn what works in weeks and the learning stays with you.

If you're running outreach already and the bottleneck is hours rather than knowledge, that's the moment hiring or outsourcing actually pays, because you've something to hand over.

The number that matters more than the option

Whichever route you pick, the thing to measure is how many touches it takes to get a conversation. Mine is 863 videos to 71 booked calls, 8.2%. That number tells you what volume you need before it's worth anyone's salary, and it's the first thing an honest partner should be able to give you about their own work.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to hire someone or use a lead generation agency?

An agency is cheaper to start and a hire is cheaper at volume, but the real difference is what you keep. A hire builds knowledge that walks out with them. An agency builds a pipeline you may not own. Ask who owns the list, the messaging and the reply data before comparing prices.

How long before outreach produces booked calls?

Weeks if the targeting is already decided, months if it's not. Most of the delay people blame on the channel is actually the time it takes to work out who they're selling to.

What should I ask an outbound partner before signing?

Who owns the target list, who owns the messaging that works, where the reply data lives, and what their own touch-to-conversation rate is. Vagueness on any of the four is the answer.
